What Is a WhatsApp Business Account (WABA)?
A WhatsApp Business Account (WABA) is the container that holds your WhatsApp templates, numbers, and limits. Here is what it is and what lives inside it.
A WhatsApp Business Account, almost always shortened to WABA, is the container Meta gives your business to run WhatsApp through the API. If the WhatsApp Business app is a single account on a phone, the WABA is the official, cloud-based account that holds everything your business needs to message at scale.
It is easy to confuse with two neighbors: the Meta Business Portfolio that sits above it, and the phone number that sits inside it. The short version: the portfolio is your whole company account, the WABA is the WhatsApp-specific part of it, and the phone number is one line inside the WABA. We map all three in this guide on where each name appears.
What lives inside a WABA
Your WABA is where the moving parts of WhatsApp messaging are stored and managed:
Your phone numbers, the actual WhatsApp lines customers message. A WABA can hold more than one, so you can separate sales and support.
Your message templates, the pre-approved messages you use to start conversations or reach people outside the 24-hour window. Templates are submitted and approved at the WABA level. Here is how templates work.
Your messaging limits and quality rating, which control how many people you can message and reflect how customers react to your messages.
Your business profile and settings for WhatsApp specifically.
How many WABAs do you need?
For almost every small business, one. A single WABA can hold multiple numbers, multiple templates, and serve your whole operation. Larger companies or agencies sometimes run several WABAs (for different brands or clients), but you do not need to think about that on day one.
Who manages the WABA
In practice, your provider (BSP) does the heavy lifting on the WABA: connecting it, submitting templates, and keeping it healthy. You still own it, and it still lives inside your company's Meta Business Portfolio, but you should not have to manage it by hand. Here is what a provider does and why you usually need one.
Common questions
Is a WABA the same as the WhatsApp Business app? No. The app is a free phone app for replying by hand. A WABA is the account behind the API, built for software, automation, and teams.
Is my WABA my phone number? No. The number lives inside the WABA. One WABA, potentially several numbers.
Can I have a WABA without a provider? Technically there is a direct route, but the vast majority of businesses use a provider because it handles the setup, the inbox, and the tools you actually need.
What happens to my WABA if I turn on Coexistence? Coexistence connects your number to the API the same way any business is onboarded, so it creates a WhatsApp Business Account for your number inside a Meta Business Portfolio (the setup returns a WABA and a phone number). Your number then runs in both the app and that WABA at once, with chats kept in sync. So Coexistence is one way to get a WABA without giving up the app, though it carries trade-offs.
